Germans in Milan

In order to prove things that Daniele told us about his beautiful city we moved to Milan for a couple of days. Lets face reality.

Actually he was right: pretty buildings and people everywhere.

We were able to catch some first pigments for summer time.

To tourists it is possible to go on top of the dome and have this great view at the city of Milan.

Lastly my internship at Delugan Meissl was done and I decided after endless nights to go back to my lovely town of Leipzig. But lets celebrate first - last dance!

It is a rule to start at the Naschmarkt and hang around in one of theese small pubs to have some beers.

Alex and Yildiz two other interns at DMAA also joined in.

And - of course - there were also Philipp and Roman!

Later on we went to the Donau bar to keep on rocking. Showing some dance moves - robotic rythms!

Attention - to much work can harm your brain.

Next to the University for applied Arts Die Angewandte you can find the the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna. Short MAK.

They are displaying there different expositions from ancient clothing to sculptures and art you can find a wide range of objects of different centuries and countries. Also a small architecture section is included: see the Steinhaus by Günther Domenig.

Designed by Ron Arad the "Rotator" is a shower and bathtub combination. The magic moment is when the water inside the tub is splashing out through the slow rotation movement.

Anish Kappor is "shooting into the corner"! His huge sculptures made out of red vaseline and wax are transformed permanently by shooting, scratching and smearing of moving structures applied.

Time passed by quickly and I'm nearly done over here in vienna planning to go back to Leipzig for finishing my diploma there. For us it always has been a must to visit Bratislava!

We arrived the city by bus comfortably in an easy way. On this sunny but icecold sunday we first took the route through the old city centre.

Georg who is working for Caramel Architects invited us to one of thier famous (because excessive) office partys. The pictures show how we survived.

So here we go with another interesting office from Denmark - JDS.

As a co-founder of the former office PLOT, Julien de Smedt is running now his own offices in Copenhagen and Brussels.

Right at the beginning of the lecture he showed their fabulous ski jump project in Oslo, Norway.

For research purposes he showed other great projects like this one. Take it easy.

First of all I want to wish you all the very best for the next year 2009. Hopefully you survived the days better than me, still struggeling with illness. Go and get some impressions from christmas partying in vienna.

What the ...?! Suddenly this thing appeared in front of the office. A friend organized the jaga-bus crew to come around and join in. Damn cool vehicle.

Stunning white interiors. The whole bus is equipped with a translucent foil surface with coloured light behind. Different light scenarios are possible via touch panel controls.

Another great architect from France: Manuelle Gautrand speaking at the TU about her works and the responsibility as an architect for our society.

I think the best knowen project of her is the showroom for citroen called C42. Located directly at the world famous Champs Elysees they have created a pure space for (nearly) only cars behind a folded glass fassade showing the abstract company logo of citroen.

And of course she showed some of the awesome towers they did. For example the winning entry for a proposal at La Defence, Paris.

Panelling Tool

So this is what I'm doing right now in my spare time after work. As a plug-in for Rhino the Panelling Tool provides a huge range of possibilities in populating components on a surface. You can choose how to subdivide the sufaces and also create, save and edit your own components. Basically it's a much more primitive form of GC but with an embeded script support a really great thing. Check it here.

Finally Roman Delugan found time to show us his fantastic House Ray One. No words for that.

Basically the whole thing feels like one continuous space. The stripe of glas below the couch area on the right acts as the structural supporting element.

The architectural office R&Sie(n) was set up in 1989 and is lead by Francois Roche (1961, France), Stephanie Lavaux (1966, France) and Jean Navarro (1971, France). The office is based in Paris. The organic, oppositional architectural projects in the practice are concerned with the bond between building, context and human relations.

During the lecture of Francois Roche at Die Angewandte at vienna he explained his strategies and visions in explaining and showing several projects.

This is an image of the project olzweg. A competition they did in 2006.

Also R&Sie(n): The hypnosis room exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris 2005.

Departure as one of the main supporting institutions for the creative industry vienna is calling for the Look/Book release event as a mirror of their ongoing projects.

At the same time its the last party of the vienna design week and an opportunity to have some fun with friends. Damn the buffet was awesome - barbecue and a lot of beck's.

Damn, there have been a lot of different things to do last weeks, so I'll be back with a lot more updates soon. We've been to several trips, exhibitions and stuff, take a look.

Fortunately they have chosen the smallest room in the Mumok to invite the Architect Peter Eisenman for a lecture about his new book. Lets sit down on the ground.

Since he heard about the other famous guys in architecture who are showing pictures of historical buildings to start a lecture, he is doing the same.The whole ambiance there was pretty relaxing.

Finally the topic came up to the ongoing project in galicia wich is under construction right now, not one of the best but still interesting.

Time starts to discover the nightlife of vienna. Lets take a deep breath.

The guys in the front are the other two intern mates. Even if they look like they are not drunk yet. Daniele (left) from Milan, Italy and Roman (right) from Nürnberg, Germany - funny people.

Night starts at Schwedenplatz, the area around Daniele's flat. We heard about a party around called "Electronix Gangbang" - promising name.

Inside the Fluc: its showing exactly how I felt after a nice resotto made by Daniele, some italian vine, a couple of tequila shots, martini drinks and a perfectly placed beer. Ready to dance.

Robert Owens did its best to entertain us party folks.

After the first days I've discovered a place where I finally stayed for 3 more evenings. Nearly got lost in there.

The Museums Quartier in central vienna. Nice spot situated within on old royal yard with 3 different museums and a lot more exhibitions and things to see. Tricky: the purple coloured yard furnitures called "Schiffchen" can be combined in several ways, even on top of each other acting like little shelters during the winter season. Hang around, relax in the sun.

Das MUMOK Wien.

Das Leopold Museum. Die Gesamtanlage ist am Wochenende fast durchgehend geöffnet, aber auch unter der Woche geht eigentlich immer was. Ideal zum Menschen treffen und Abendtrunk.

Wenn Du allein in eine fremde Stadt kommst, dazu der Mitbewohner im Urlaub, kein Telefon oder Internet, bleibt Dir nur eine Möglichkeit: Go out!

Typische Postkartenmotive Wiens: zu unglaublich sonnigem Wetter und guter Musik im Ohr erstmal direkt durchs Zentrum stolpern. Stephansdom, historische Straßenbahnen und Kutschen überall.

Nette Hütte. Einer der vielen Dachaufbauten im 1. Bezirk.

Freshe Kombo klassizistischer und zeitgenössischer Architektur: nach 2 Stunden möchte man sich die Augen auswaschen um wieder normal sehen zu können. Stielaugensyndrom.

Zeit das Sachsenland zu verlassen und aufzubrechen. Nach einem kurzen Zwischenstopp in Hamburg ging es straight nach Wien, mit dem ICE. Motorschaden, Verspätung des Anschlußzuges, 5 Kippen auf der Zugtoilette und mit am Ende insgesamt 3 Stunden Verzögerung Ankunft oder auch Endstation. Damn. Nach kurzer Orientierung ohne Probleme finde ich mein zukünftiges Domizil. Gelegen im wohl mit Abstand am meisten von Urinschwaden eingehüllten Viertel Wiens. Der Gehweg ist ein Patchwork Meisterwerk aus Kot und anderen Ausscheidungen. Damn II. Die erste Nahrungsquelle in dieser Nacht wird wohl erst einmal ein Döner, nachdem mich der polnisch sprechende Nachbar mit "hier Schlüssel, da Raum" einweist. Scheiß drauf ich bin da: Wien ich komme.

Yeah Baby die Sonne lacht. Die Boys & Girls schmeißen sich in ihre Schwimmanzüge und checken den Cossi. Auch die eine oder andere Kalkleiche wird gesichtet, aus dem Keller geborgen und ans Licht befördert.

Die letzten Sommertage in Leipzig 2008 waren großartig und unvergesslich. Das ganze schreit nach vielen, vielen Wiederholungen.

4 Wheels for 4 Boys. Einfache Rechnung für ein Familienfahrrad am Cospudener See, aber nur wenn alle mitmachen. Sobald Bier im Gepäck landet ist das nicht immer garantiert. Zumindest haben wir das Teil ordentlich gerockt.

Später mussten wir feststellen, dass uns der Besitzer nicht mehr so gern hatte, wie zwei Stunden zuvor. Vielleicht lag das an den weit verstreuten Trümmer- und Menschenteilen, die aufgesammelt werden mussten. Zum Glück konnte man die Blackbox retten und die letzten Sekunden unserer Rennfahrerleben dokumentieren. Als Mahnung an die Nachwelt.

Nach der Quarantäne folgt ein Blog. Ich habe überlebt, zwei Wochen isoliert ohne Internet, Telefon und Waschmaschine. Okay das Waschproblem hat sich dann schnell erledigt und ich konnte wieder unter Leute. Jedenfalls: der Informationsdienst läuft wieder, alle Agenten sind undercover am Start und berichten live wie es mir geht. Und wie immer muss man erstmal ganz weit ausholen, kommt gut für die story. Also - zurück in die Vergangenheit.
